Prologue: The Perfect Life : Part 5

The new Shelby project took longer than he had expected and the wedding got delayed more than a year. Surprisingly Samantha was not bothered with the delay; however, she was equally eagerly planning out the wedding details.

During this time, Ian’s home changed to a house; Dee was changing from a naive introvert to a gullible and aggressive extrovert, Kevin was facing problems with his wife and teenage brother who had taken on a serious drug problem resulting from neglect; Tyler and Adrian were not getting along well in their relationships, both facing a break up, the Maxwells troubled with the way things were shaping up for their children. Ian seemed happy with Samantha, but Mrs. Maxwell wasn’t so sure about her, and as time went by, her suspicions about Samantha becoming a good wife for Ian became even deeper! Similar were Mr. Maxwell’s views after his visit to Ian’s place. All he saw in Ian’s house was his pictures from his movies. He knew Ian was unaffected by his popularity; fame and money were nothing new to him, but this display would give him delusions of grandeur! He knew Ian would not be happy in this place no matter what he thought now! The girl was not doing anything good for him.

Ian finished the project and now frantically he began to try and finalize the date of his wedding. He’d been talking this over with his mother.

“Are you sure about this, Ian? I would like if you would think one more time before committing to her.”

“I’m sure, Mom. And I’m very happy.”

“Are you absolutely sure?”

“Of course Mom! Why? Is there anything wrong? You do like her, don’t you?”

“Well, alright, son. I just wanted to make sure that you would be happy with Samantha. After all it’s a matter of your lives. As your mother I’m naturally concerned. You dad and I are with you in your every decision. So when do you plan the ceremony?”

“Well Mom, this was what I called you up for. We want it as soon as possible. Already it has been delayed due to my project. Now I want to get this done before another project starts. I want you to discuss with dad, Kevin, Dianne and my babies! And yeah ... how are they? I miss them so much! I promised to take Evan on a camping trip. He’d be all upset with me for delaying that too!”

Mrs. Maxwell answered laughing, “Yes, he was pestering Dianne about it. Now that you will be married you would have even less time for it. Better fulfill your promise before your wedding, or he’ll be upset all through the wedding.”

“I think I can fix that. With my mood now, I’d take him to moon for camping! And how is Sera? I miss her so much, she’s so much like lil Dee.”

“Sera is good; she misses you too. ‘Unca’ Ian is all she wants to play with!”

Ian laughed at his dear little Sera “Oh! I’ll play with her all she wants to. Well Mom, about the date. I was thinking about 14th this month?”

“14th? But honey that’s hardly two weeks away! How will you get everything fixed?”

“Oh all is fixed. Sam has been planning for months now. All we need now is a date. If it’s alright with everyone else we’d send off the invitations.”

“Let me speak once with your dad and others. How about I call you tonight?”

“Sure Mom. Anytime.” Then added shyly, “Actually Mom please make it as soon as dad gets home.”

She smiled at his eagerness, “Of course. Now what would you like for your gift?”

“Oh just you Mom!”

And on this happy note Ian ended his call and eagerly waited for a call from his Mom. She called him at six-thirty that evening. His dad was home. Happily they decided that 14th was great. Adrian and Tyler celebrated with champagne, with cheers to Mr. Maxwell in N.Y. who was still on phone enjoying his own champagne! Ian was getting impatient to tell Samantha that the date she wanted was fixed. He picked up the phone but then decided that he wanted to tell her personally. He ran out specifically to keep Adrian off.

Adrian laughed and shouted after him, “No problems, today I give you leave!” he said with a majestic wave of his hand!

Ian drove off leaving his chauffeur running and panting behind him, while Tyler and Adrian danced around with their drinks in their hands.

On the way Ian saw a flower shop and a girl on a bicycle buying some. What a wonderful idea! He stopped to buy Samantha some flowers. He had problems with change but the girl already there was only too glad to solve his little problem. Today he did not care if the world saw and rushed after him; he wanted to share this happiness with everyone he could find.

He reached the Shelby office, people were beginning to file out, office hours were getting over, but he knew that Samantha would be working late as usual. He rushed in banging doors everywhere behind him. He reached her office and found her door locked on the inside. How unusual! In past almost 3 years he had never found it locked. He knocked.

“Sammy! You there?”

“Yeah, coming!”

Why did she sound so panicked? Hardly matters! She’s probably fixing her make-up! Women!

It was sometime before she opened it. He could hardly contain himself and kept knocking and calling out her name without intermission. Soon as she opened it, he pulled her up in his arms and whirled her around.

“Oh Sammy baby, you won’t believe! 14th is fixed. We’re getting married on 14th. This month. Two weeks later. Two weeks more and you’ll be mine!”

“Oh, Ian! Is it? We are? Very Nice.” was all she said.

“Yeah. What is the matter? Is everything all right? You are happy, aren’t you?”

“Of course.” She said fixing her expressions “It has just been delayed so much that it was difficult to take it in so suddenly. 14th is it? Terrific!” and hugged him back.

“Hey, I need to tell this to Garrett. Has he left? No? But he must be on his way; I must hurry. OK I’ll be gone now. Tell him and then I’ve got to tell Ashley and Lauren. I’m going to tell them personally, even though I feel Tyler and Adrian have told them.”

“Oh. OK.”

“I’ll see you soon. Very soon.” he smiled.

“Good bye!“ she kissed his cheek.

“Bye!” he smiled and left hurriedly.

He found Garrett on the stairs and told him. Just when he entered his car again, he saw the flowers he’d bought for her. He laughed at himself. He had been so impatient that he forgot to take them. He grabbed the bunch and ran up again. He was just outside her door when …

What? This is Sammy? But she’s kissing him? Who’s he?
